The Art Behind the Hat
How a love of millinery became part of the story behind Famly Bizness
My passion for the art of hat-making began with formal hands-on training and has grown into a lifelong creative practice. I attended hat-making classes at West Los Angeles College, where I participated in Saturday workshops, and continued my education through the Unified School District Adult Night School, following my favorite instructor, Mrs. King, whose teaching greatly shaped my foundation and appreciation for the craft.
At the time, I was the youngest student in the class, which gave me a unique opportunity to observe, learn, and work closely with the traditional tools and techniques of millinery. I gained experience using wooden hat blocks, hat stretchers, steamers, buckram (coarse woven interfacing) for structured frames, and steel hat wire with connectors used to form and support hat brims and crowns.
Through these classes, I learned the architecture of hat making—how form, balance, and materials come together to create a wearable work of art. I worked with felt bodies made from wool and fur-blend materials, valued for their durability, shaping flexibility, and natural water resistance. I also studied a wide range of straw materials, including raffia, paper straw, Panama, and robust hemp, each chosen for its breathability, resilience, and ability to withstand the elements.
Set up for future goals
Over the years, this technical foundation evolved into mastery through imagination, practice, and love for the craft. Hat making became more than a skill—it became my creative language and personal expression. I believe a hat should enhance confidence and individuality, not overpower it. As I often say:
“You wear the hat — don’t let the hat wear you.”
I proudly serve as my own best model, designing with intention, authenticity, and respect for the timeless art of millinery.
How our Hats Play a Role in our Goal
Youth Corner is a purpose-driven, youth-led initiative that transforms craftsmanship into opportunity, encouraging the next generation to create, lead, and build with intention. Every hat represents more than style, it represents community investment, cultural expression, and belief in our youth. Together, we are shaping futures, one handcrafted piece at a time.
