Floppy Hats
A floppy hat can change an outfit before you add anything else. Put one on, and a simple look gains movement, shade, and a little drama. Its wide, flexible brim shifts as you walk, sometimes framing your face and sometimes dipping toward your shoulder.
Wide-brimmed hats have long served a practical purpose outdoors. The softer, oversized floppy style became especially recognizable in fashion during the late 1960s and 1970s. What makes it enduring is that it offers both function and expression: the brim can give you space from the sun while making a silhouette entirely your own.
When choosing one, start with the brim. In our hat range, a 5- to 6-inch floppy brim makes a sweeping statement, while a 2- to 3-inch stiff brim creates a neater, more controlled outline. Neither is automatically the better style; the choice depends on the look you want and where you plan to wear it.
If sun protection is a priority, check the specific hat, not just its brim width. A wide brim helps shade the face, ears, and neck, while a verified UPF rating tells you how much ultraviolet radiation passes through the material. UPF 50 fabric blocks about 98% of UV radiation; the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends a brim of at least three inches all around for adult sun-protective hats. A hat still works best alongside other sun-protection measures.
The finishing question is personal: do you want the brim to move with you, or do you want a sharper line that stays put? Try both. The one that makes you stand a little taller is probably the one you’ll reach for again.
